The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the leading certification scheme for individuals working in the UK construction industry. It provides proof that workers have the necessary training, qualifications, and health and safety knowledge to carry out their role safely and competently on site.

Recognised across the construction sector, the CSCS card is a trusted form of identification for contractors, site managers, and clients seeking assurance that individuals meet industry standards. The scheme is endorsed by major contractors, trade bodies, and regulatory organisations as part of their site access and competence verification procedures.

Card Types and Routes

CSCS offers a range of cards tailored to different occupations, experience levels, and qualifications, including:

  • Labourer Card (Green) – for entry-level workers with basic health and safety training

  • Skilled Worker Card (Blue) – for those with NVQs or SVQs at Level 2

  • Advanced and Supervisory Cards – for tradespeople with Level 3 qualifications or supervisory responsibilities

  • Manager Card (Black) – for experienced site and project managers

  • Academically Qualified Person (AQP) Card – for those holding approved construction-related degrees

  • Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) Card – for members of recognised professional bodies

Each card is colour-coded and occupation-specific, helping employers and site managers quickly identify a worker’s competence level.

Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test

To obtain a CSCS card, applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test, ensuring they understand current safety standards and can work responsibly on site. The test content varies depending on the type of card being applied for (e.g. Operative, Managerial, or Specialist).

CSCS Green Labourer Card

The CSCS Green Labourer Card is intended for those working in general labouring or entry-level site roles. To qualify, candidates must complete a CSCS-approved Level 1 Health and Safety course, such as:

  • IOSH Health & Safety in Construction (widely accepted for Green Card applications)

  • CITB Health and Safety Awareness course

  • Other regulated Level 1 health and safety qualifications

This card is valid for five years and is a common requirement for those entering the industry or working in non-skilled support roles.

Digital Cards and Verification

CSCS now offers digital smart cards, allowing workers to present their credentials via the CSCS Smart Check app, which is accepted across sites in the UK. Cards contain embedded chip technology and QR codes, enabling real-time verification of qualifications, card status, and expiry dates.

Why Hold a CSCS Card?

Holding a valid CSCS card:

  • Demonstrates that you are trained, qualified, and compliant with industry standards

  • Helps meet site access and pre-qualification requirements

  • Increases employability within the construction sector

  • Contributes to a safer and more professional working environment

Whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced construction professional, the CSCS card is a recognised benchmark of site readiness and occupational competence across the UK.

Further information about the CSCS Labourer Card can be found on the CSCS website.

Developed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) – the world’s largest chartered body for health and safety professionals – this one-day course provides a practical introduction to workplace safety and environmental responsibility. It’s widely recognised across the UK and internationally as a benchmark qualification for promoting a strong, positive safety culture.

Whether working in an office, factory, warehouse, retail, or construction environment, the course gives learners the confidence and knowledge to identify risks, follow safety procedures, and contribute to a safer working environment.

What the Course Covers:

The IOSH Working Safely course covers four core modules:

  • Introducing Working Safely – Understand the importance of health and safety and the employee’s role in maintaining a safe workplace.

  • Defining Hazard and Risk – Learn how to identify hazards and assess the level of risk using practical examples relevant to different working environments.

  • Identifying Common Hazards – Explore common workplace hazards such as slips, trips, falls, fire, electricity, manual handling, chemicals, and noise.

  • Improving Safety Performance – Understand how safety performance is measured and how individuals can contribute to improving safety culture.
